Traveling on an airplane with a drone is generally permissible, but you need to adhere to specific guidelines and regulations to ensure a smooth journey. Here’s what you should know:

Before You Fly

  1. Check Airline Policies:

    • Airlines have varying rules about carrying drones as carry-on or checked baggage. Most allow drones in carry-on luggage because of battery safety concerns.

    • Some airlines may restrict the size or type of drone you can bring.

  2. Battery Regulations:

    • Lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries are typically restricted in checked baggage.

    • FAA regulations generally allow batteries with a capacity under 100 Wh in carry-on luggage. For batteries between 100 Wh and 160 Wh, you may need airline approval.

    • Spare batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

  3. International Rules:

    • If traveling internationally, check the drone regulations of your destination country. Some countries have strict laws about drone import, ownership, and use.

Packing Your Drone

  • Carry-On Luggage:

    • Place the drone in a protective case to avoid damage.

    • Keep it accessible for TSA inspection.

  • Spare Batteries:

    • Store them in a battery-safe bag or wrap terminals with insulating tape.

    • Carry them separately in your hand luggage.

  • Props & Accessories:

    • Consider removing propellers to save space and avoid damage. Keep small accessories in secure compartments.

At the Airport

  • Security Check:

    • Drones are allowed through TSA checkpoints but may require additional inspection. Cooperate with officers if asked to unpack or power on the drone.

  • Declare Hazardous Items:

    • Declare lithium batteries if asked. Mention their watt-hour rating if necessary.

At Your Destination

  • Local Regulations:

    • Research and follow local drone laws. Many countries require registration or restrict flying drones in certain areas.

  • No-Fly Zones:

    • Avoid flying near airports, military bases, or sensitive infrastructure.

  • Insurance:

    • Consider travel insurance that covers drones in case of loss or damage.
